March

This series of events revolves around promoting local and seasonal kai (food). The Activation Hui with Our Food Network on the 6th of March serves as a collaborative platform to discuss and initiate local and seasonal food initiatives. Following this, the Hui at the NH Garden on the 12th of March, facilitated by Janice, likely involves hands-on activities or discussions related to gardening or sustainable food practices within the Neighbourhood.

These initiatives aim to foster community engagement, promote sustainable food choices, and enhance awareness of local food resources. The timeline aligns with the beginning of March and extends into the mid-semester break starting on the 29th of March.

Meet your expert

Janice Lord

Associate Professor, at Botany Department, University of Otago and Director of the Otago Regional Herbarium

I am a botanist with interests in the evolution, ecology and conservation of New Zealand's unique plants, and how they interact with pollinators, seed dispersers and microbial mutualisms.

My research is motivated by a desire to provide plant-based knowledge that will contribute to species conservation, improved ecosystem services and climate change mitigation. I am also interested in traditional use of plants by Māori, particularly how mātauranga and botanical knowledge intersect with respect to plants used in textiles.

I was responsible for the design of the 100% native 'greenroof' on the University of Otago's Greenstar-rated William James Building, and for Flora Finder, the smartphone application developed to help identify New Zealand's most common native trees, shrubs and weeds.
